Indian actor and model Ruchi Gujjar drew global attention at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, not only for her traditional gold lehenga but for a politically charged accessory: a necklace featuring portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gujjar attended the Chopard-hosted "Caroline’s Universe" dinner, where her attire quickly became a topic of international discussion. The necklace, which displayed images of Modi framed in pearls and lotus-themed red enamel, was styled with Rajasthani artistic elements and positioned as a tribute to India’s political leadership.

"It represents India's growing stature and my admiration for the Prime Minister's leadership," Gujjar said in a statement to News18. She emphasized that the necklace was both a personal salute and a symbol of national progress.

The lehenga was designed by Roopa Sharmaa and showcased traditional Gota Patti, mirror embroidery, and handcrafted detailing, reflecting regional craftsmanship. Accompanying it was a Bandhani dupatta created by the design house Zaribari, with Zardozi accents. Gujjar described it as a representation of her cultural roots.

The appearance sparked extensive commentary online, with reactions split between praise for her nationalistic expression and criticism over the politicized statement on an international fashion platform.

Gujjar, a former Miss Haryana 2023 and alumna of Maharani College, Jaipur, transitioned to entertainment via Mumbai’s music video industry. Her portfolio includes performances in songs such as "Jab Tu Meri Na Rahi" and "Heli Mein Chor."

Coming from a conservative Gujjar family in Rajasthan, Gujjar acknowledged the societal barriers she had to overcome to enter the film industry. "Women in my community aren't usually encouraged to pursue such careers," she said in an interview with BollywoodMDB. "But I wanted to change that narrative."

She cited her father’s encouragement as pivotal. "Initially, my mother was hesitant, but now she supports me. My father backed me from the start," Gujjar added.

With aspirations to enter South Indian cinema, Gujjar said she is looking forward to working in regional films that are popular among audiences nationwide.
